Mumbai Food! Grub Shub’s savoury waffles win hearts

Who knew even savoury waffles could go a long way and win hearts, writes Shikha Jain

For longer than anyone can remember, waffles have been a sweet, toasty breakfast treat. But Grub Shub decides to give it a twist. A well-made waffle is a glorious thing and Indianising something foreign is even a better option for our palates. Now, sinfully sweet is a thing of the past and well-travelled millennials are lapping up salty and spicy desserts that are becoming a part of the Indian main course menu.

On a long humid day, nothing beats a cold beverage to please our throats. My colleague and I were greeted in the cheery interiors of Grub Shub by a Peach and Ginger Cooler, a refreshing blend of peach nectar, ginger ale and fresh soda.

Soon we were tackling the crisp and golden on the outside, topped with hummus, feta cheese, olives, bits and pieces of tikka and roasted tomato dip Mezze Waffle.

Cheesy Makhani Fries

Next followed a thin and crisp, well-seasoned waffle with green chillies, onions, tomatoes and coriander served with three different chutneys that are inspired by great grandmother’s recipe. The Grub Shub Uttapam was surprisingly delicious.

The Madras Masala Waffle Dosa came with potato masala sandwiched between two dosa waffles topped with lip-smacking gun powder and served with three colourful chutneys. It’s delectable and a smart fusion of masala dosa and waffle.

There’s no doubt that the waffle is an amazing, versatile food, but we also explore what more is on the Grub Shub menu. Apart from savoury waffles, they also serve dainty yet filling milkshakes in cute little jars, which can later find a place on your desk. Smooth Operator is one of them that is sure to lure you with its combination of strawberries, ice cream, cheesecake and milk.

The Key Lime Pie Shake is something you will not find anywhere. It is a perfect blend of fresh mint leaves, lime extract, pineapple, vanilla ice cream and milk. A delightful thick shake balances out the sweetness of pineapple and vanilla ice cream and the tanginess of lime extract.

Mezze Waffle

French fries lovers are sure to be spoilt for choice. The Cheesy Makhani Fries is something that stands out on the menu, which is dipped in conventional paneer makhani gravy with the paneer crumbled to tiny particles.

While everyone is confused about where to eat next, this would be a nice stop-by at Matunga to grab a quick bite and to give your palate a delightful change.
